What is the Community Opportunities Service?

Most of us would agree that we all need friends, a decent standard of living, the opportunity to work and keep learning and developing (among other things) to stay mentally and physically healthy. We need to feel valued by those around us and that we can contribute to our communities.

Living with mental ill health can lead to many of these needs not being met, which may make recovery more difficult. People with mental health problems can feel undervalued, socially isolated and excluded from community life.

But with the right opportunities and support, mental health problems do not have to be a barrier to getting on with your life.

Through individual support COS helps people in a variety of ways:

  • Finding out about your own goals and interests and taking steps towards these goals

  • Supporting people to improve their social networks

  • Providing supported activities in which to gain confidence and skills

  • Working in the Ladywell Unit wards, linking with the community

  • Providing support towards work or other vocational goals
